Technology is a bit like clothing. Here’s how: Hundreds of thousands of years ago, a single item of clothing (a well-tailored pelt or loincloth) would probably suffice. Clothing did one thing, provide cover.
Nowadays, however, we’re immeasurably more sophisticated. We have all kinds of clothing, worn in different combinations to achieve different looks.
Tech has become no different. Tens of years ago, a PC was our primary, if not sole, piece of “technology.” But now we have smartphones, and tablets, and e-book readers, and Internet TV boxes and gaming consoles.
Since we’ve had clothing for a while, most people have the basics: the dark suit, the cocktail dress, the khakis, the jeans, the button-down shirts, the heels.
